# 5 on our best spots in The Whitsundays is Airlie Beach.
Regarded as the gateway to The Whitsundays, Airlie Beach is an excellent holiday destination in itself. Boasting the huge man made swimming lagoon, Airlie Beach now has that resort type feel where everyone is relaxed and happy, soaking up the sun, swimming and enjoying the tropical atmosphere of this beautiful village by the sea.
Today, Airlie Beach is much more than a sleepy fishing village, it’s a vibrant seaside resort perfect for adventures into The Whitsundays.
We chose to live in Airlie Beach for a variety of reasons. We love the relaxed lifestyle, wearing swimwear instead of jackets, meeting people from all over the world and best of all, having a home where all our relatives and friends want to visit.
You can swim in the lagoon or in the sea, jump out of a plane (with a parachute of course), loop the loop in an old tiger moth, take a seaplane or helicopter flight to the Great Barrier Reef, experience a cruise to the world famous Whitehaven Beach, go camping on an uninhabited island, enjoy a day trip to a luxury island resort, snorkel brilliant fringing reefs, scuba dive with thousands of fish and other marine life, say hello to a turtle, go shopping at the Saturday markets, take a walk in the rainforest, swim beneath waterfalls, or just plain relax in a town that is never in a hurry. Alternatively you can use Airlie Beach as the starting point to long days under sail where you hire and charter your own yacht, or use the ferry services of Cruise Whitsundays for island resort stays.
Of course we have our favorite tours and cruises. High on our list of affordable cruises is the day trip to Blue Pearl Bay and Langford Island on the 12 meter yacht Illusions.
Another of our favorites is the full day Whitehaven Cruise with Cruise Whitsundays. This cruise takes you on a fabulous day of snorkeling, bush walking and relaxing, visiting Chalkies Beach for snorkeling, Hill Inlet for the best views over Whitehaven Beach and allows time to unwind for a few hours on the beautiful Whitehaven Beach.
For the adventure lovers a fast and furious ride with Ocean Rafting can be a highlight of your Whitsundays experience. You can see crocodiles in the wild, pat a koala or enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the sunset at Abel Point Marina. (Our favorite place to have a quiet drink, awesome pizzas and the most fabulous views of the Whitsundays is Sorrento Restaurant and Bar, but let’s keep it a secret between us so it doesn’t get too crowded.)
